Lambda refuses to re-admit Philip. Sexual misconduct in AA history

Big Book P 84.  Love and tolerance is our code.
(Into Action chapter, talking about Tenth Step)
Lambda Board, Lambda Users, other friends:

Many claim God gave us ten commandments including Honor God above all and Thou Shalt Not Kill.  Humans quickly decided this meant they should kill everybody who broke any of the commandments as their way of honoring God.

Over and over, AA's International Conference of the General Membership has decreed that "nobody can be expelled, " "no one can keep you out,"
and "we're not one bit afraid you will hurt us."  Unfortunately, small groups have decided to bar certain undesirables like the brain-injured before they scare off newcomers and thus destroy their little  AA group.  Sad!  Sad!  Sad!

I understand Lambda Houston has effectively chased off more brain-injured guys than just Philip.  I was told one poor brain-injured guy was kicked out because he was overheard asking someone if he wanted a b... j...   How could that possibly harm the group?   And Lambda says it's gay and proud!  I mean this guy had been run over by a bus.  His handicap was evident from 25 feet!

When I first showed up at the Minneapolis Founders group, the older, chain-smoking, poor looking regulars scared me at first.  Thank God no one ran them off.

Now I am old...I'm fat.... and I am ostentatiously unrich.  That ought to scare off any newcomer who is a little sober and still a little young good looking.  But, I've been sober 38 years.
I'm sure I scare off lots more new comers than Philip or Charley!

Finally, I'd bet my a hundred dollars that those people who chased off Philip and Charley now wish they had chased me off first.

Let's get back to our primary purpose:  To help all who reach out to Lambda for help to achieve sobriety.  Ah men

For the whole story about Philip, see the blog below
Tim Campbell
 ************

On February 10, Lambda Chair Frank T. sent Philip B a letter refusing to let him get his 16 year medallion and or attend AA meetings at Lambda.  The letter claims he was guilty of  "sexual misconduct."  Lambda's definition of that is unclear.  No one to my knowledge has accused Philip of any criminal intent.  He has not been charged with anything similar.

In an on-going effort to educate Lambda users and its board on these issues, we present below the story of the first "sexual misconduct" recorded in AA's own history.

Sexual misconduct in AA history

On pages 97-98 of Dr. Bob and the Good Oldtimers, published by Alcoholic Anonymous in 1980, Dr. Bob’s daughter Sue Windows tells the story of the first “thirteenth step,” that is, the first sex with a newcomer, in AA known history thus:

“There was a man we’ll call ‘Victor,’ a former mayor of Akron, and a lady we’ll call ‘Lil,’ who was the first woman to seek help.

“Together, Victor and the lady known as Lil started out to write the ‘thirteenth step,’ long before the first twelve were ever thought of.  What is more, they say it began in Dr. Bob’s office—on his examination table—while he (Dr. Bob) was at the City Club engaged in his sacrosanct Monday night bridge game.

“In any case, Victor decided it was time for him to go home—but Lil was loaded.  So he called Ernie to explain the predicament.  When Ernie arrived, he saw Lil grab a handful of little pills from Dr. Bob’s cabinet.

...

“They say Dr. Bob was leery of anything to do with women alcoholics for a long time thereafter, although he still tried to help as best he could with any who came along.  And Bill Wilson, speaking with Sue Windows in the 1950s (the year Dr. Bob died), recalled how they all were scandalized by the episode.

“ ‘As drunk, I don’t know why we should have been,’ Bill said.  ‘But we felt that the performance of some of those early people coming in would disrupt us entirely.  Lil, I guess, was absolutely the first woman we ever dealt with.’

“Bill thought Lil never made it, but Sue said that she straightened out after a few years, got married, and had children.  Only it wasn’t in the AA program that Lil recovered.”

---------

This editor notes there was never any talk of barring Victor from AA, just Lil.

The moral of the story is, recovering drunks have often been downright ludicrous in their over-reactions to interpersonal problems in AA.  Recovering drunks seem most prone to getting in to trouble hanging around without any group activity going on.

Lambda is today continuing an old but perhaps not so honorable an AA shortcoming.

Philip apology and promise, medical notes, background

Philip asked me to post this letter from him.  I put notes on his medical condition below that, and the previous posting of his story, my satire, and my editorial comment below that.  Tim Campbell

January 29, 2012

Frank:

After studying Tim Campbell’s write-up of my banishment by the Lambda Board, I understand more specifically what I am doing wrong than I did from previous verbal and written warnings from the board.  I request once again to be allowed to attend meetings at Lambda.  Lambda is a big and important part of my life.  Lambda may not need me, but I sure need Lambda.

I now know, from the specific clarity of Tim’s written material, that my kissing and touching offend some people. Consequently, I promise to never kiss people at Lambda again, and never to touch or play with their chests and or muscles or other body parts, not even jokingly.

I am very sorry my behavior has bothered some people and promise not to do that in the future.

Once again I ask that you respond to my request some days prior to birthday night at Lambda for February 2012.  I would very much like to get my 16-year medallion that night at Lambda.

Respectfully,

Philip Bowman

Phenytek from Physicians Desk Reference 2007 p 2160-1

Philip takes medications for seizures (phenytoin sodium or Phenytek) daily and reliably.  The PDR notes:  “Phenytoin is and antiepileptic drug...Phenytoin tends to stabilize the threshold against hyperexcitability caused by excessive stimulation or environmental changes....  Phenytek Capsules are indicated for the control of generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) and complex partial (psychomotor, temporal lobe) seizures and prevention and treatment of seizures during or following neurosurgery."

Epilepsy Encyclopaedia Britannica CD 1998

Epilepsy, sudden and recurrent disturbances in mental function, state of consciousness, sensory activity, or movements of the body, caused by paroxysmal malfunction of cerebral nerve cells.  Epilepsy includes generalized convulsions in which there is sudden unconsciousness with falling and shaking of limbs (grand mal), momentary lapses of awareness (petit mal), as well as other types of activity that may include bizarre  automatic behavior, strange memories, illusory and hallucinatory experiences, and changes in mood.”

Onset of seizures.  “In more than 50 percent of persons with generalized convulsions, there is some evidence of a beginning in a local area (of the brain). Focal onset may be manifested by localized movements or sensations of a part of the body or by subjectively experienced warnings, called auras, that last from a fraction of a second to a few seconds.  Auras arising from specific areas of the brain include illusions that the environment is strangely familiar, auditory or visual hallucinations, ringing in the ears, and unpleasant odors or tastes.  Although part of the seizure proper, auras are considered warnings of an impending attack.

Defect following brain surgery

“Surgical operations on the sides of the brain (temporal lobes) to remove tissues that produce symptoms of epilepsy are routine.  While good results are often achieved, a degree of memory defect ensues.  Operations on the dominant (usually left) temporal lobe tend to hamper one’s ability to learn verbal information by hearing and reading...Operations on one temporal lobe where there is unsuspected damage to its fellow on the other side of the brain produce severe and persistent memory defect, altogether comparable to postencephalitic amnesia.”

AA Unity: Tradition 1.  Page 129 Paragraph 3

“We believe thee isn’t a fellowship on earth which lavishes more devote care upon its individual members; sure there is none which more jealously guards the individual’s right to think, talk, and act as he wishes.  No A.A. can compel another to do anything; nobody can be punished or expelled.  Are Twelve Steps to recovery are suggestions; the Twelve Traditions which guarantee A.A.’s unity contain not a single “Don’t.”  They repeatedly say “We ought...”but never “you must!”

Philip's brain-injury and his current problem

In the early 1990s, , Philip B was attacked by basher/s upon leaving the gay bars near Fairview and Stanford in Houston, Texas.  The attack left him with a major brain injury and he spent about three months in the hospital, much of it in intensive care at Ben Taub General Hopsital.

Prior to this attack and injury, Philip was a top salesman with a national firm.  You never met anyone more upbeat and outgoing.  Smiles all over the place.

Philip's brain injury did not take away his out going, extroverted personality.  He rarely remembers your name or persona, but he greets every smiling face with a hug and a kiss.  His shares in AA meetings are incredibly up beat, and usually end with "KISS, KISS, KISS, keep it simple sweetheart!"

Philip's problem is  that since his brain injury, he also greets most everyone smiling like an outrageous drag-queen emceeing the muscleman strip shows common in the gay bars:  That is, he gives people a little tongue, sometimes a tongue in the ear, and sometimes feels up their chest muscles like a muscle show emcee might.

In spite of  multiple warnings from individuals and the Lambda board, Philip can't get it through his brain-damaged head that this extroverted behavior is not making him popular.

Philip's success staying sober and being self-supporting

Philip has been continuously sober since February 4, 1996.  He attends AA meetings around central Houston, mostly at Lambda which is a gay AA club with over 40 meetings each week.

Philip is entirely self-support doing maid service for individuals and often calls himself "Mucho Maid."

Lambda Board bars Philip Permanently

In mid May, 2011 the Lambda Board warned Philip that if they got any more complaints about him violating any of its over 20 long codes of conduct, he would be barred from Lambda permanently.  Lambda had already barred him several times. By July 8, this same board had already found reason to violate Philip again and barred him permanently from Lambda.  (Somehow, that's no surprise.)

Lambda barred Philip not only from it's lounge spaces, where all the trouble seems to occur, but also from all 45 of its meetings.   To my knowledge, Philip has never disrupted an AA meeting.

As of this writing (January 26, 2012) Lambda continues to refuse to allow Philip to attend meetings there.   He has requested in writing permission to celebrate his 16 years sobriety at Lambda at the end of February.  He is patiently awaiting Lambda's response.  A response may or may not come.

The Only Requirement for AA Membership
(Page 139 Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions published 1953)

“The only requirement for A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking.”
(First published by AA 1946 later confirmed at 1950 Convention in Cleveland.)

“This Tradition is packed with meaning.  For A.A. is really saying to every serious drinker, “You are an A.A. member if you say so.  You can declare yourself in; nobody can keep you out.  No matter who you are, no matter how low you’ve gone, no matter how grave your emotional complications—even your crimes—we still can’t deny you A.A.  We don’t want to keep you out.  We aren’t a bit afraid you’ll harm us, never mind how twisted or violent you may be.”

(This text was written by Bill Wilson himself.)

Editorial Comment by Tim Campbell

The only codes AA needs are Love thy neighbor as thyself and our primary purpose is to stay sober and to help others achieve sobriety.  Those who claim we need special language codes, dress codes and manners codes worry too much.  Although we’d like AA meeting places to be reasonably safe environments, we need to remember that AA exists to help sociopathic users of alcohol and drugs.  Many of us come in ruff.  Many, like me, also remain ruff.  Gay AA places need to remember that our community comprises of many outrageous personalities and many prudes.  Good gay club management should not take sides.  We are all grownups.  We can work out our differences without much supervision from boards.

Why people were slow to respond to Sandusky stuff

Patriot-News
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

To the Editor:
It seems to me that many in the spotlight are wringing their hands way too dramatically  over the failure of authorities at Penn State to call in the police sooner.  I think that failure  reflects some important truth about allegations of sex with minors.  First, reasonable people fear that calling in the police will make matters worse for the child involved.  Two, reasonable people fear becoming “The boy who cried ‘Wolf.’  Everyone knows a powerful person like a Sandusky will get an even more powerful attorney and challenge the accuser or accusers.
In short, calling in the police over a suspicion, or with a vulnerable witness, or with a second hand witness, is like burning down the house to roast the pig.
The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s public statements about morality rather than law particularly turned me off.  Why hadn’t this Attorney General spoken to the legislature about that problem in the law sooner?  Something tells me he’s looking to make a scapegoat out of the graduate student who first blew the whistle on Sandusky.  Yuk!
And finally, I was disgusted by the thought of a stadium full of sports fans memorializing these "victims".  For starters, Sandusky has not been convicted yet.  Second, these “victims” are all very much alive and likely to live for years.  That is, if this memorial service itself doesn’t drive them to suicide.
As long as reporting sex with minors to the police is destined to blow up like an A-bomb, reasonable people will look for other options.  I don’t blame them.

Jolanda Jones portrait at Pride 2009

Tim Campbell lent this portrait to GCAM for display in the Montrose Counseling Center.  It was on display from December 2009 through early to mid 2011.  Then suddenly it disappeared.

When Campbell tried to retrieve the portrait, which he had never signed over to GCAM, GCAM Curator Judy Reeves put him off for over three months.  When finally she did return the portrait to Campbell, Reeves made an incredible scene:  She called people to witness Campbell  making off with the portrait af if he were stealing something from her.  She blocked his way taking photographs.

Campbell had in fact given Reeves a signed receipt for the portrait which he in fact owned himself.

Reeves insisted there were some papers Campbell was obligated to sign.  Campbell offered to read and sign them but Reeves said she didn't have them with her.  Campbell decided at that point that Reeves was nuts, gave Reeves the prepared receipt, took the portrait and walked out.

So why all the fuss over a portrait of Jones at Gay Pride?

Campbell thinks he stumbled on some closet info about Jones and Ms Pride that Reeves want to guard in an act of probably misguided heroism. Campbell guesses that Reeves thought by hiding the portrait, she was protecting Jones from some outing.

Campbell says "I've always just assumed Jones was gay.  That's why I did her portrait.  In fact, I did another one of her alone, all in pink, and gifted it to Jones herself at City Hall.  She told me at the time that I had hit on the color scheme of her campaign for reelection.   Hmmm.   I thought.  The girly-girl color of choice.  To me, outing Jolanda Jones would be like outing Liberace.  Who hasn't guessed it already?  But of course, it is always possible that I have made a huge, huge mistake.  But  I doubt it!"

Campbell suspects Jones may be seen by many blacks as straight whereas most of those in the gay community who know who she is believe she is gay.  So what's the big deal?

The best way to make a book or a work of art  famous is to ban it.  Thanks Judy.
